In September 2014, the 85-member Global Coalition was formed to eliminate the terrorist organisation. Since then, the ISF has remained on the front lines, collaborating with partners to fortify their capabilities and ensure that Daesh never returns. This mission, led by Iraqi partners, is still ongoing.
The Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) defeated Daesh in Iraq five years ago. This hard-won victory was a significant step toward liberating the region from Daesh’s terror.
When Daesh seized control of large swaths of Iraq in 2014, they imposed a reign of terror. They committed mass executions, sexual slavery, and other forms of sexual and gender-based violence, torture, and mutilation against millions of Iraqis. Because of Daesh’s occupation and brutal form of control, millions of Iraqis have been forced to flee their homes, resulting in a dire humanitarian crisis.

In addition to its military mission, the Global Coalition works to limit Daesh’s access to finance, prevent the cross-border movement of foreign terrorist fighters, support stabilisation efforts in liberated areas, and counter Daesh propaganda.
Iraqi authorities have made significant progress in restoring hope and rebuilding communities devastated by Daesh, from taking the lead in combating Daesh remnants to allowing the safe return of internally displaced persons (IDPs)and repatriating and reintegrating Iraqis.
Streets and town squares that were once used for extrajudicial executions and public floggings are now bustling with life, thanks to local governments and international donors who rebuilt cities and restored damaged landmarks.
