To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the alliance between the United States and the Republic of Korea (ROK), President Biden and President Yoon Suk Yeol of the ROK met in Washington.
President Biden commended the ROK for taking the initiative to assume more global responsibilities, including by hosting the Summit for Democracy, strengthening its alliance with the G7 and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation on the basis of shared values, and increasing its financial support for UN peacekeeping operations. President Yoon, for his part, voiced support for the US’ joint initiatives to uphold security and peace in the area, including AUKUS launch.
Presidents Yoon and Biden join other world leaders in denouncing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The DPRK’s flagrant disregard for human rights and the dignity of its own citizens, as well as its choice to devote its limited resources to the development of WMD, pose a serious security threat to the Alliance and are condemned by the US and ROK. The two Presidents demand that the DPRK cease the development of its nuclear and ballistic missile programmes.
In order to counter DPRK acts as well as those of other people and organisations that violate UN Security Council resolutions, the United States and the ROK are dedicated to cooperating with the UN Security Council and the international community.
Nuclear energy will only be used for peaceful purposes by two countries. The two presidents agreed that nuclear power was crucial to resolving the energy security and reaching their objective of net zero emissions.
The Presidents reiterated their nations’ commitment to participating in international civil nuclear cooperation in accordance with the IAEA Protocol while reciprocally respecting one another’s export control laws and intellectual property rights.
They vowed to use financial resources, enhance recipient nations’ capabilities, and create a more durable nuclear supply chain to support the responsible worldwide development and deployment of civil nuclear energy.
