The IAEA Board of Governors elected Ambassador Ivo Sramek as Chairperson of the IAEA Board of Governors for 2022-2023 by acclamation. His one-year term began on October 3rd. He succeeds Republic of Korea Ambassador Ham Sang Wook.
Ambassador Sramek has been the Czech Republic’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), and other international organisations in Vienna since September 2018. Ambassador Sramek previously served as Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Security and Multilateral Issues (2016-2018).
Ambassador Sramek, was born in Prague in 1955, is a career diplomat who joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1987. He has held several positions at the Ministry, including Director General of the European, Director of the UN Department, Deputy Permanent Representative to NATO etc
The Board of Governors, along with the annual General Conference of IAEA Member States, is one of the IAEA’s two policy-making bodies.
The Board examines the IAEA’s financial statements, programme, and budget and makes recommendations to the General Conference. It considers membership applications, approves safeguards agreements, and publishes the IAEA’s safety standards. It also appoints the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, with the approval of the General Conference.
The Board meets five times every year on average and for 2022-23, Board has 35 Members.
